I believe I originally stumbled upon Sparkle Stories a year ago via a homeschool blog. At that time, I knew little about this fantastic story series or about the world of audiobooks, in general. However, the idea of sweet tales being read aloud to my kids sounded a-mazing. Wait. Correction: the idea of sweet tales being read BY SOMEONE OTHER THAN ME sounded amazing. So I downloaded the free podcast on I-tunes and began playing stories to my kids during car rides and road trips. Sparkles Stories, narrated by a man named David, are short gentle original narratives and they last around 20 minutes. I just play them from my I-phone, using blue tooth in the car. There are several series, including So Many Fairies, Junkyard Tales, and our absolute favorite the Martin and Sylvia series. The free podcast provides a good taste of each one (the web site lists them all), as well as stand-alone stories focused a certain topic or holiday.
After exhausting the podcasts, I decided it was time to take the plunge and we started a subscription to the Martin and Sylvia series for a few dollars a month. These great tales are about a brother and sister who learn, explore, and discover something new each week. My kids love Martin and Sylvia. There is nothing more magical than turning on a Sparkle Story and watching a quiet hush fall over my crazy talkative kids. The stories are peaceful and calming. For twenty blissful minutes, we just listen. I recently learned the Sparkle Story team is also launching a Kickstarter campaign to develop an app. That will be fun to keep an eye on. If you’re interested in checking these out, I suggest heading to the podcast first.
